7 Salesforce Data Quality Metrics That Impact Forecast Accuracy

Your forecast model is sophisticated. Your weighted pipeline calculations are dialed in. Your stage conversion rates are calibrated to three years of historical data.

None of that matters if the underlying Salesforce data is wrong.

Forecast accuracy isn't a modeling problem. It's a data quality problem. And most RevOps teams don't track the specific metrics that tell you whether your data is trustworthy before the forecast breaks.

Here are seven metrics to add to your weekly review. Track them, and you'll catch data quality issues weeks before they show up as missed forecasts.

How to use this list

Measure each metric at the rep level, not team aggregate. Set your own baselines from current data, then track improvement. Team averages hide exactly the problems you're trying to find.

1. Contact Role Coverage Rate

What percentage of your open opps have at least one contact role? A deal without contact roles is a deal without identified stakeholders. You don't know who the champion is, who the economic buyer is, or who might block the deal. Reps selling to company names instead of people are building pipeline on hope.

Measure it with the Opportunities with Contact Roles report type. Cross-reference against all open opps past Discovery. Formula: (Opps with 1+ Contact Roles) / (Total Open Opps) x 100. Aim for 90%+ past initial qualification.

2. Average Days in Stage

How long do opportunities sit in each stage before moving forward or dying? When deals exceed 1.5x your team's average for a given stage, they're likely stalled or dead. A pipeline full of aged opportunities inflates coverage ratios and creates false confidence in the forecast. See our deeper dive in The Hidden Cost of Inconsistent Stage Progression.

Use the Opportunities with Opportunity History report type. Filter by stage, open opps only. Calculate average days from stage entry to today. Set your own benchmarks based on your first measurement, then flag anything above 1.5x.

3. Next Step Completion Rate

This one catches the gap between what reps say they'll do and what actually happens. A pipeline full of "Send proposal" next steps that never get sent is a fantasy forecast.

Track the Next Step field value, then check if a corresponding activity was logged within 5 business days. Formula: (Next Steps with matching follow-up activity) / (Total Next Steps set) x 100. Above 75% means your reps are running deals with discipline. Below 50% means your pipeline reviews are theater.

4. Close Date Accuracy

This is the single biggest driver of forecast accuracy. If reps set close dates optimistically and never update them, your entire forecast is shifted. Every deal with a stale close date is a silent contributor to your miss.

Compare original close date (or last updated close date) against actual close date for won deals. For open deals, flag any with a close date in the past that hasn't been updated. You want 70%+ of won deals closing within 14 days of their stated close date, and zero open deals with past close dates still sitting there.

5. Lead Response Time (Median)

Contacting a lead within 5 minutes makes you 21x more likely to qualify them compared to waiting 30 minutes (Oldroyd, 2007). If your median response time is measured in hours, you're leaving qualified pipeline on the table.

Compare Lead CreatedDate against the first logged activity (call or email) on that lead. Use median, not average -- outliers will skew the number otherwise. Under 30 minutes for inbound leads is solid. Under 5 minutes is elite.

6. Activity-to-Meeting Conversion Rate

Activity volume is vanity. A rep doing 30 calls with 5 meetings booked is more valuable than one doing 80 calls with 2 meetings. This metric separates productive effort from "effort theater" -- reps who look busy but aren't generating pipeline.

Filter outbound activities in the numerator. Meetings booked (events created) within 7 days as denominator. Formula: (Meetings Booked / Total Outbound Activities) x 100. Use your team's current average as the baseline, then aim to improve it quarterly.

7. Pipeline Creation Velocity

If you only look at total pipeline, you miss the flow. A team sitting on $2M in pipeline sounds healthy until you realize $1.5M of it was created last quarter and hasn't moved. This metric tells you whether your team is actively building or coasting on old deals.

Sum new opportunity values created per week (filtered by qualified stage or above). Track as a rolling 4-week average to smooth out spikes. You need enough weekly creation to maintain your required coverage ratio after accounting for expected close rates and deal fall-out.

Putting it together

These seven metrics form a data quality scorecard. Track them weekly, and you'll have an early warning system that catches problems when they're still fixable -- not when the quarter is already lost.

A few things to keep in mind:

Measure at the rep level, not the team aggregate. The team average might look fine while two reps have catastrophically low contact role coverage. Aggregate numbers hide exactly the problems you're trying to find.

Don't chase industry averages either. Measure where you are today, set improvement targets, and track progress against your own baseline.

The harder question is how to get reps to actually care about these numbers. Reporting alone won't do it. Make these metrics visible, put them on a leaderboard, and recognize the reps who improve.
